Stupid Is As Stupid Does

The following email from SWAP (Small Wilderness Area Preservation.) If you know the moron or morons responsible for this, please make that call.

SMALL WILDERNESS AREA PRESERVATION (S.W.A.P.)Los Osos/Morro Bay Chapter * P.O. Box 6442, Los Osos, CA 93412Contact: 528-0392 for information

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - DESTRUCTION IN ELFIN FOREST A vandal spent the afternoon on Memorial Day wreaking havoc in a portion of the El Moro Elfin Forest Natural Area. The Los Osos preserve sits on the southeastern shore of Morro Bay. The area that was vandalized is fenced off and not open to the public. The intruder cut through fencing and systematically used hands, feet and possibly a heavy tool tearing and breaking limbs off Morro Manzanitas. The Morro Manzanita is a federally listed threatened plant species under the Endangered Species Act. It exists only in the area of Los Osos and nowhere else on earth. A member of Small Wilderness Area Preservation, SWAP, the organization that saved the Elfin Forest from development scared the intruder away. The noise of breaking wood alerted the SWAP member to the intruder's actions. The area that suffered damage extends for over an acre and may have been vandalized on more than one day. The vandal also damaged or destroyed several projects in the area such as revegetation and installation of controls against soil erosion. The affected dune habitat is quite sensitive to human intrusion and contains numerous native plants and animals. The identity of the intruder remains unknown. Federal, State and San Luis County authorities have been notified of the incident. SWAP is offering a reward of $1,000 to anyone who has information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.
The SWAP phone number in Los Osos is 528-0392.

Cutting through a fence? Heavy tool?

This doesn't sound like "kids being kids" or "punks being punks."

No. This "perp" sounds like he (I've already ruled out a female) has a specific motive, other than just random vandalism.

Either he doesn't like the people-traffic that the forest attracts, or the vegetation is blocking his view of the bay, or both.

What I'd do, is go to that damaged Manzanita tree, and look at the nearby homes, and notice if any of the homes' views benefited from the removed limbs, then I'd go knock on a few of those doors.

I'd also ask around if anyone might know of someone that's complained about the people in the forest. It's likely someone that lives near the forest.

Where's my $1000?

We were not able to pull out clumps of the invading species Veldt grass, because we found Moro sholder banded snails there.
The perp may had been collecting manzanita firewood.

Speaking of stupid, I fixed some typos on my recent blog article of Bill Garfinkel, which you can find here.

Also, a quick side comment about the article on The ROCK. Ripley's County rebuttal is now available as a full download. Click here to download the report in its entirety. Whether you agree with Ripley or not, the report is comprehensive and informative.

You know, on my brunch break, I got to a-thinkin' about my first post.

It's not this: "he doesn't like the people-traffic"

It's this: "the vegetation is blocking his view of the bay"

That's why the perp also did this: "The vandal also damaged or destroyed several projects in the area such as revegetation and installation of controls against soil erosion" -- to prevent the vegetation from growing (back).

Which, also means, unfortunately for the perp, finding out who did it should be relatively easy.

However, I want to put on my "defense attorney" hat.

I have a question:

Has the vegetation at the Elfin Forest grown over the years to such an extent that portions are now obstructing views for nearby homes?

If so, I can see how a homeowner might want to go to the "heavy tool" card.

And, IF that's the case, 1) interesting story, and 2) it sounds like some type of compromise might be in order between SWAP and the view-obstructed property owners.

As a country bumpkin that, oh, let's just say... knows my way around firewood, I don't think so. Waaay too much work.

Alon, as an EF Weed Warrior, do you know the answer to my question above?

Has the vegetation at the EF grown to where it is now obstructing views that it wasn't obstructing before?

Interesting question.

I'm surprised Ron didn't conclude that Pandora did it... and I nearly fell out of my chair when I realized Ron wrote about something that just recently happened rather than waiting 4 or 5 years...

Does his attempt at becoming more current in Los Osos events that he will now write an investigative piece about why the PZLDF hasn't paid a dime in their Agreement with the Chucky CSD...???? It's pure theft Ron, should be right up your alley....

I like the 4:1 odds Shark...

Could the same tool - force - be used in these 2 situations?

Force people to use step? Force people to accept Tri-W?
