Death in Cayucos

Check out the story at http://www.calcoastnews.com/ on alleged activities at the Dancing Star Foundation's animal sanctuary in Cayucos. Not pretty, but it is interesting looking at the financial information noted, including the salaries for the Board Members. IF this matter is investigated and perhaps litigated, I suspect the result will simply be another Sad Life Lesson: If you have millions of dollars you want to be used to set up and run a foundation for a certain purpose, don't die until all the money is used up by yourself in the way you wish to spend it. Then die.

Otherwise . . .

Ann,

I just read the full story. Downright disgusting, if not illegal.

The legal terms of any trust, estate or endowment are always very specific. Based on some of the comments by people who knew the Foundation's benfactor, it sounds like her wishes are not being fulfilled. If that's the case, the activities of the fiduciaries should be investigated, and if they are violating the terms of the endowment, they should be removed by the courts - and prosecuted if their activities are found to be illegal.

I find it hard to believe that an endowment of $43 million is insufficient to support her cause. I'd be curious to know just how much of that endowment has been used the way she intended.

If you take a look at the salaries that are quoted in the story for the top three Board Members -- yearly a mil a year, it's easy to see how quickly you could blow through a pile of money.

Well, now we wait until somebody . . . what? . . . files a lawsuit to open the books and check to see if the terms of the foundation are being fulfilled. It also gets dicy when dealing with old, feeble, sick animals -- when to call it? From the story, several Vets were involved and so far as I know, their ethical code gives them the option of refusing to kill anything they deem is being improperly killed. So, this will be a mess, I'm sure.

Very sad.
