Talk about Dumbth

Last night I attended another of the multi-part lecture series on Islam in SLOTown.  It was, as usual, wonderfully informative and was attended by about 300 people.  These are people interested in educating themselves about a topic they likely knew little about.  By contrast, take a look at the link below and watch the UTube video.  There's the face of  a pretty good part of America: It's a face filled with malice, hands full of flags, heads full of Stupid, all dangerous as snakes.  Oh, and did I mention, fully supported by various elected Congresspeople. Disgraceful?  Yes, and, sadly, but the tip of a very large iceberg, I'm afraid.

Ya and Mormons try the same thing, Islam will never convert me and I doubt very seriously that it could convert the vast majority of Americans that are quite pleased with their respective religion or lack thereof.
Now go to a place where the daily grind is a struggle against starvation, well.....

If you live in San Luis Obispo County you really, really REALLY need to come to the "Taste of Islam" (6 week) seminar being held at the Downtown Center theatre and get yourself educated. (being jointly presented by Cal Poly religious studies prof. a Methodist Minister and a real, live Muslim M.D. who goes around the world saving lives, including "christian" ones.) You also really, really REALLY need to read a few good books on Islam since it's clear you have absolutely NO understanding what "Shari'a" means. You're operating from a place of ignorance and fear. That's truly never a good place to be because you have confused a tiny handful of religious nuts who are filled with malice and ignorance with a vast relm of peaceful people and now declare them one and the same. That's like saying all Christians are Jim Jones and all Christians are plotting to make us Americans drink cyanide-laced Kool-Aide. Pllluuueeeze. Get a grip. your ignornance has made you fearful and your fear has blinded you.

Mike: Good point. In the U.S. we live under the Constituion, not Mormon "law" or Shari'a law. U.S. Constituional law. That's how our society has organized itself. Though I do know many fundamentalist Christians wish to impose a sort of Christian Theocracy on the rest of us. For the most part, ain't gonna happen because of, ta-DA, the Constitution. That's why all this sqawk about "shari'a" is just ignorance and demagoguery by uninformed, fearful people. Sad, but those folks, alas, are always with us I'm afraid. And when they're filled with malice, they get dangerous too, just like their radicalized, malice-filled fundamentalist Muslim counterparts. One coin, two sides, each calling the other "evil." Feh.

Yea, I guess you're right. Maybe we should learn about the religion that wants to take over the world. With any luck though, i'll be gone before I have to embrace it.
Sincerely, M

M said, "the religion that wants to take over the world..." too bad you missed last week's class because it addressed that exact issue.

Opportunities to become more informed are still out there. Two classes remain in the series, and it's never too late to join. Just show up Thursday 3/10 and 3/17 5:15PM-6:30PM at the Downtown Center Cinema and walk right in. The final two class topics are...3/10 Women and Islam; Violence and Islam...3/17 Extremism, Islamophobia, and Islam in America.

Your questions/comments/concerns can be addressed during the question and answer period, or you can have a conversation with any of the teachers. They tend to hang around afterward.

If the dinner hour is a reason for not attending, you can even buy popcorn or bring in a sandwich and a Coke.

M, I hope you'll attend the Thursday class. It's free, starts at 5:15 at the Downtown Center theatre (below Barnes & Nobel. Very informative. You can also get a copy of the paperback book, "No God But God" by Reza Aslan, which is a good overview of the history of Islam. Your statement that somehow you fear you're gonna be taken over by Islam is foolish talk. If you had attended last week's class, for example, you would have seen that issue addressed with a wonderful example of shari'a's application and organizing principle -- from the individual to the family to the society -- and would see that we here in the U.S. already live under our own Shari'a laws. For example, personally, privately, each of us is free to live by our own religion's codes of behavior (shari'a), we are free to organize our family's behavior according to our individual religion's proscriptions and rules(think of an Orthodox Jewish family keeping kosher, or a Mormon family following their church's rules of behavior & etc. They are living under their religious version of shari'a), and our whole (public) society is organized under our own shari'a LAWS: Those shari'a laws are called the Constitution. Until the majority of Americans change that Constitutional Shari'a , there's no way any single religion's rules will prevail over the Constitution. (Though many Christian fundamentalists sure are trying to do just that, in case you haven't noticed. Though you don't see Kafir Liner going all hysterical about that, now do you?) And if Kafir Liner (above) had bothered to educate him/herself before going all hysterical on his/her ass, he/she would have not have ended up looking like such an uninformed idiot. Please, M, don't be that guy. C'mon down and catch the last two lectures.Guarantee you'll learn a whole lot AND have a great time.

Is the reason I need to suddenly learn about Islam now is so I won't get the wrong idea about why their always in the news now? Usually bad news. Maybe after I attend a Rap symposium and learn to assimilate with that I will learn some more about Islam.
Sincerely, M

M sez:" Maybe we should learn about the religion that wants to take over the world. With any luck though, i'll be gone before I have to embrace it."

Who said Islam "wants to take over the world?" A few batshit crazy fundamentalists, that who. And who says you have to "embrace" Islam? Where is THAT idea coming from? Since when is learning accurate information about a religion equated with "embracing" it?

Let me take a guess: Like so many Americans, you've gotten snippets (most often wrong) or deliberately and falsely spun information, maliciious in its intent, or ignorantly conflated snippets and are, like too many Americans, confused and misinformed. And here is a chance to get some accurate information, and your reaction is one, not of curiosity, but one of resentment ("why should I learn anything about Islam")when it's clear to me that you might actually benefit from some factual information rather than staying stuck with your ill-informed fears (eeek, they're gong to take over the world and force me to be a Muslim!)

How sad. turns out you are . . that guy. Too bad.
