Sounds very interesting, but I couldn't resist-
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said "Stop! don't do it!"
"Why shouldn't I?" he said.
I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!" He said, "Like what?"
I said, "Well...are you religious or atheist?" He said, "Religious." I said, "Me too! Are you christian or buddhist?" He said, "Christian." I said, "Me too! Are you catholic or protestant?" He said, "Protestant."
I said, "Me too! Are you episcopalian or baptist?" He said, "Baptist!"
I said,"Wow! Me too! Are you baptist church of god or baptist church of the lord?" He said, "Baptist church of god!"
I said, "Me too! Are you original baptist church of god, or are you reformed baptist church of god?" He said,"Reformed Baptist church of god!"
I said, "Me too! Are you reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1879, or reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915?" He said, "Reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915!"
I said, "Die, heretic scum", and pushed him off. --

Ah, yes. There in a joke is the History of Religion: Little tribal monkeys sectioning off into smaller tribes, each of which have The True Word, so think that that gives them permission to shove the other guy off the bridge.

Sounds so very much like the history of the sewer monkey zealot tribes of Los Egos.

The reason I was reminded of the Joke was the specific format date of the East -West schism (which resulted in there being two Popes, quite a split considering the Pope's role), similar to that in the final layout of the jokes progression.
All the lectures look interesting
You left out "On Jan. 20, Rabbi Linda Bertenthal will discuss the Torah and the written tradition in Judaism." BTW.
The lesson from the joke is actually in where the idea "Heresy" applies. As (Variably) tolerant as religions can be of other religions, all religions in order to conserve their identity and veracity to origins, find a greater threat in (mis)interpretations of their immutable truths and variations that are sectarian and close to home. Somehow some far off exotic other religions don't pose the same threat because they don't chip away at the foundation of the religion and don't offer as clear a path of choice of an alternate reading.
