Sweet!!

This beautiful fellow has quite a harem and they're driving him crazy because he's constantly rounding them up and they're just as constantly ignoring him and wandering off. It's quite a lively scene.

Yes, he is quite showy! I guess lady chickens have minds of their own though. No roosters where we are babysitting, but the three girls respond well to some crackers shaken in a paper bag - they will follow you right back to the coop! (Maybe he needs some crackers in a bag!)

Went on a vacation to Kauai and there were chickens running all over the place, didn't give it much thought until we opened up the Audubon bird book and , lo and behold, there was the "Red Junglefowl" A magnificent bird that has the call that sounds like a chicken
I am not making this up.

Mike: Must be a species native to Hawaii? Of course, if regular chickens are running around loose with native species, do they interbreed?

Chickens are really cool. Quite smart and can become real pets. I'd love to have a bunch of chickens in the back yard, but . . . the dogs . . . in a few moments I'd be eating a whole lot of suddenly created drumsticks, I'm afraid.

we have 20 chickens in a variety of coops.
we have to wire all sides and they can't free range, so we try to feed them all the extra vegetation we can find. garden and kitchen refuse.
not only would the dogs eat them, but we have all kinds of night critters who would love a fresh chicken dinner....bear and raccoons and fox and coyotes and hawks.
we love our chickens, and they are not dumb, they remember things and they are very very social.
sweet creatures, most. I have to carry a squirt bottle around one very territorial rooster.

Yeah, those roosters are something. Reminds me of films I've seen of wild mustangs ( or elk or llamas or other herd animals) with the stallions having to run themselves ragged to guard his "flock" and chase off all the other males sneaking around.

This is the only rooster in that flock and there aren't any other roosters around but he's keeping a close eye out on his ladies!

Very cool critters.
